How To Make Spring Rolls

Here’s a basic recipe for making delicious spring rolls:

Ingredients:

  1. Spring roll wrappers (usually found in the freezer section of Asian grocery stores)
  2. Cooked and cooled vermicelli rice noodles
  3. Thinly sliced vegetables (e.g., carrots, cucumbers, bell peppers)
  4. Cooked and cooled protein (e.g., shrimp, chicken, tofu)
  5. Fresh herbs (e.g., cilantro, mint, basil)
  6. Lettuce leaves
  7. Soy sauce or hoisin sauce for dipping
  8. Cooking oil for frying (if making fried spring rolls)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare your filling ingredients: Slice the vegetables, cook the protein if it’s not already cooked, and set aside all your ingredients. Make sure everything is cool before rolling.
  2. Soften the spring roll wrappers: Fill a large shallow dish with warm water. Dip one spring roll wrapper into the water for a few seconds until it softens. Lay it flat on a clean, damp kitchen towel or a plate.
  3. Assemble the spring rolls: Start by placing a lettuce leaf on the softened wrapper, leaving about an inch of space on each side. Add a small amount of vermicelli noodles, sliced vegetables, protein, and fresh herbs on top of the lettuce.
  4. Roll up the spring roll: Fold the sides of the wrapper over the filling, then fold the bottom over the filling. Roll it up tightly, similar to rolling a burrito.
  5. Repeat: Continue assembling and rolling until you’ve used up all your filling ingredients.
  6. Serve: Serve the spring rolls with soy sauce or hoisin sauce for dipping.

If you prefer fried spring rolls:

  1. Heat oil in a deep skillet or pot to 350-375°F (175-190°C).
  2. Gently place the spring rolls into the hot oil and fry until they’re golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  4. Serve your fried spring rolls with dipping sauce.
